Rep. Denny Rehberg, the Republican challenging Sen. Jon Tester (D), strikes a decidedly independent tone in a new television ad launched today.

It’s Rehberg’s fourth ad and the first one not to draw a contrast between himself and Tester — and it’s similar in tone to the ads Tester has been running. It opens with Rehberg driving his green Jeep Wrangler with the top down in front of the Capitol.

“A lot of people talk about taking their values to Washington, but few really do,” Rehberg says in the ad. “I’m not driven by what’s best for Republicans or Democrats, I’m guided by what’s best for Montana. That’s why I voted to protect the Children’s Health Insurance Program from George Bush’s cuts, against President Obama’s health care law and against every single bailout, Republican and Democrat. In the Senate, I’ll do the same.”

The campaign spent about $60,000 to run the ad statewide on broadcast and cable for a week. In a statement announcing the ad, Rehberg spokesman Chris Bond said the Republican is “an independent-minded leader.”

Roll Call rates the race as a Tossup.
