New York: DCCC Independent Expenditure Targets Chris Gibson
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s independent expenditure arm is set to launch a new ad on Thursday knocking freshman Rep. Chris Gibson (R-N.Y.).
The ad hits Gibson, who is running for re-election in the newly configured 19th district, for his support for the budget plan authored by Rep. Paul Ryan, the Republican vice presidential nominee. Hewing to the standard Democratic line of attack, the ad says Gibson voted to “essentially end Medicare,” quoting an oft-cited Wall Street Journal story from 2011. Republicans argue that Ryan’s plan will preserve Medicare for future generations.
“Chris Gibson said he was different,” a male narrator says to animated images of Gibson and dark cutouts of figures marching toward the Capitol. “But Chris Gibson joined the Republican crowd in Congress and voted to essentially end Medicare.”
“Chris Gibson voted for Paul Ryan’s budget that leaves seniors at the mercy of the insurance industry. Under Ryan’s plan, seniors would pay $6,400 a year more for their health care, while millionaires get more tax cuts,” the narrator says. “Chris Gibson, one of the crowd — the crowd that wants to end Medicare.”
The ad is airing on targeted New York City cable television. It’s backed by about $341,000.
Gibson faces former federal prosecutor Julian Schreibman (D) in November. The contest is one of a handful of competitive races in the home state of DCCC Chairman Steve Israel.
Roll Call rates the race as a Tossup.
