Martha Robertson, an upstate county legislator, announced Thursday that she will challenge three-term Rep. Tom Reed, R-N.Y., in the 23rd District.

Robertson – a Democrat who currently chairs the Tompkins County Legislature – said her work there has helped bring more than 700 jobs to her community, which includes Cornell University and Ithaca College.

“We gave Congressman Tom Reed a chance to do the right thing for our families, but instead he went to Washington and started siding with the special interests and playing partisan games,” Robertson said in a news release. “I’m running for Congress because the families of this district deserve a leader who will wake up every day and deliver real solutions for all of our families.”

The 23rd District leans Republican and is is located in the southwest corner of the state. The district shares a large portion of New York’s border with Pennsylvania.

Last year, Reed defeated a different member of the Tompkins County Legislature, Nate Shinagawa, 51 percent to 48 percent.
