Judge Gives 2-Year Prison Term for Campaign Finance Violations

A federal judge gave a two-year prison sentence to the first of eight men convicted of campaign finance violations involving former Connecticut Speaker Chris Donovan’s losing 2012 congressional campaign.

David Moffa, former president of AFSCME Local 387 in Waterbury, Conn., was sentenced to two years in prison and one year of supervised release, along with a $5,000 fine. Moffa had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to make false statements to the FEC and impede the FEC’s enforcement of campaign finance laws. Moffa had given a contribution in the name of another and was a conduit for illegal contributions on behalf of tobacco shop owners who were asking the speaker to help kill legislation that would hurt their business.
