Businessman David Perdue has joined the crowded Georgia primary for Senate, further shaking up the GOP field in one of the cycle’s top races.

Perdue, the former CEO of Dollar General and cousin of former Gov. Sonny Perdue, has been exploring a bid for a few months. He announced his campaign Wednesday with a video on his campaign website.

“The career politicians have created this mess, and we just can’t expect them to clean it up,” Perdue says. “If we want different results from Washington, we just have to send a different kind of person to Washington.

In a race filled with current and former elected officials, Perdue hopes to stand out as a first-time candidate for office and successful businessman.

“I have spent my career running businesses and creating jobs,” he says, touting the jobs he created at Dollar General. “I’m ready to use my private sector experience to help get big government out of the way and unleash the power of our American economy.”

Republicans currently in the race include Reps. Paul Broun, Phil Gingrey and Jack Kingston, former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel, minister Derrick Grayson and businessman Eugene Yu.

On the Democratic side, Michelle Nunn, a longtime nonprofit leader and daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn, officially entered the race on Tuesday.

They’re all vying for the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
