Democrat Ups Spending in Primary for Competitive Illinois Race

Physics professor George Gollin, a Democrat running in the competitive House race in Illinois, will inject more money into the television airwaves on Monday, according to two sources tracking ad buys in the district.
Gollin, who is running against former judge Ann Callis for the party’s nomination in the competitive 13th District , will spend $48,000 on broadcast in the district on a new ad that will air between March 4 and March 10.
Gollin’s campaign declined to release the ad but confirmed the size of the buy.
The buy is more than double what Callis spent on ads for the March 18 primary thus far.
Callis, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s pick in the contest, has so far spent $20,000 behind an ad touting her support of veterans .
Whomever wins the primary will almost certainly face off with GOP Rep. Rodney Davis in November. Davis captured the seat in 2012 by one of the closest margins in the country, and the race is again expected to be competitive in 2014 .
Davis faces primary opposition from former Miss America Erika Harold. However, polling has cast doubt on her chances in the upcoming primary.
Illinois’ 13th District is rated a Tilt Republican contest by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call. President Barack Obama and GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney each received 49 percent of the district’s vote.
