Remarks: Joe Biden Speaks at a Labor Day Event in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania - September 5, 2022

  • Joe Biden
    Person
Slightly Negative

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:00:00-00:00:14 (15 sec)
It's good to be almost home. Well, I'll tell you what: You know, this is a pretty critical election, to state the obvious. 1

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:00:14-00:00:49 (35 sec)
Before I start, I want to say a word about a few good friends that we lost: a guy named Jack Shea -- some of you knew -- and Pat Gillespie. Both good friends, people I worked with my whole career. And they had an attitude that could be summed up in one word, in my view. A little bit like my dad would say, "Everybody -- everyone, no matter what your background is, is entitled to be treated with dignity -- with dignity, with respect." 2

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:00:49-00:01:25 (36 sec)
And, you know, I want to thank the elected officials here today. Bobby Casey has been a close friend of mine for a long time. His dad and I were friends as well. Matter of fact, we are ages split. I -- his dad was much older than him, and I - me than I am with -- to -- to Bobby. And we were raised in the same neighborhood in Green Ridge, about five city blocks away. Went to the same grade school, as I had moved because when -- when coal died in Scranton, there weren't any jobs. My dad -- my dad was in sales, not in -- not in mining. But we moved back down to Delaware, where he was from. 3

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:01:25-00:01:45 (20 sec)
Moved to a little steel town called Claymont, Delaware. Claymont used to have more steel. It used to have almost 5,000 steel workers. The whole community was built -- it was a company town, literally. And steel died. It was dying in -- there's not a single steel worker left. 4

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:01:45-00:02:11 (27 sec)
And we know what happened was, about midway through my -- I got elected to -- I got very engaged in -- in my case, the Civil Rights Movement. And -- and as a kid, I was -- I worked a lot in the movement at work. And I got deeply involved in the Democratic Party, because the Democratic Party in Delaware was a southern Democratic Party then. We were more of a southern state than -- than a northeastern state. 5

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:02:11-00:02:43 (32 sec)
And I got involved, and one thing led to another. And one day, a group came to me of the senior members of the party. They said they wanted me to run for the Senate. I said, "I'm not old enough." And I wasn't. I was only 29 years old. And a former chief justice whose family has more United States senators than any family in American history looked at me and he said, "You obviously didn't do very well in law school, Joe." He said, "You don't have to be 30 to be elected. You have to be 29. You can be 29. You just can't get sworn in until you're 30." 6

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:02:43-00:03:17 (33 sec)
And so, one thing led to another, and I ended up deciding to run. But I was having great difficulty getting support. Even though people liked me, or at least the labor guys liked me, they didn't think I could win until I got brought up to Pittsburgh by the local leader of the steel workers in Delaware and -- into Pittsburgh. And I came to -- here and met with the then-president of the steel workers. And he endorsed me about nine weeks out, and I won by 3,100 votes. 7

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:03:17-00:03:22 (5 sec)
So, the fact is: You guys own me. You've been with me from the beginning. 8

Joe Biden

Slightly Negative
00:03:22-00:03:46 (24 sec)
And, look, folks -- Bobby, Mayor -- Representative [DEL: Boyle :DEL] [Doyle], Representative Lamb, Mayor Gainey -- your County Executive is a hell of a guy. And John. If I have to be in a foxhole, I want John Fetterman in there with me. I'll tell you what, I want John in there with me. I mean that sincerely. 9

Joe Biden

Neutral
00:03:46-00:03:54 (8 sec)
Look, there's a whole lot of folks here. I'm -- I don't want to keep you standing much longer, but let me just say a couple of things. 10

Joe Biden

Positive
00:03:54-00:04:14 (20 sec)
Number one, the -- you know, I started my campaign because Tom jumped in and convinced me -- he didn't convince me; he made the case I should run. Because that train ride, I was running -- I was campaigning for Democrats. I was out of office, and I was campaigning for Democrats. 11

Joe Biden

Positive
00:04:14-00:04:31 (17 sec)
But you know what? This is not your father's Republican Party. This is a totally different party, man. These guys are different. I've worked with a lot of Republicans -- conservative Republicans I worked with. Got a lot done. And we -- but it was always -- there was always something decent about the work. 12

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:04:31-00:04:56 (26 sec)
But then we moved to this place where, all of a sudden, the reason that made me run -- I decided -- it was when you saw those people come out of the fields down in Virginia carrying torches -- literally coming out of the fields carrying torches, with swastikas, chanting the same anti-Semitic bile that was chanted in -- literally the same anti-Semitic bile chanted in Germany in the '30s accompanied by the Ku Klux Klan. 13

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:04:56-00:05:13 (16 sec)
And the guy that I beat in this elect- -- last election -- when they asked what did he thought, he said there were really fine people on both sides. I said, "Something is really wrong. Something is changing." And that's when I talked to Tom and others about helping me out. They decided to help me out. 14

Joe Biden

Slightly Positive
00:05:13-00:05:31 (18 sec)
Because look, folks, here's where I think we are, and I'm going to be brief: The fact is that -- I think there are periods in history where we reach certain inflection points, where everything that's going to come after is going to change what's been before for the next generation. 15

Joe Biden

Positive
00:05:31-00:05:51 (20 sec)
And we're in one of those points. It happened six, eight -- every gener- -- every six or eight generations. Things are changing. They're changing rapidly. You see everything from what's happening in Europe and India; from Russia, China. Things are changing. And the United States has to regain its footing and remember who we are. 16

Joe Biden

Neutral
00:05:51-00:06:12 (21 sec)
And so, one of the things that I concluded was that, you know, those inflection points are the places where you look back 2, 5, 10 years later and realize it's just not what it was before; it's either better or worse than it was before. Not the same. You're not going to go back to the same. 17

Joe Biden

Leans Negative
00:06:12-00:06:37 (25 sec)
And I'm absolutely convinced -- and I mean this. No one has ever doubted I mean what I say. The problem is I sometimes say all that I mean. And -- but all kidding aside, one of the things that was clear to me is that this new group, headed by the former President -- for- -- the former defeated President -- we found ourselves in a situation where we really are going to look forward or look backwards. 18

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:06:37-00:06:46 (9 sec)
And it's clear which way he wants to look. It's clear which way the new MAGA Republicans are. They're extreme. And democracy is really at stake. 19

Joe Biden

Negative
00:06:46-00:07:05 (20 sec)
You can't be a democracy when you support violence when you don't like the outcome of an election. You can't call yourself a democracy when you don't, in fact, count the votes that people legitimately cast and count that as what you are. You can't be a democracy and call yourself one if you continue to do what they're doing. 20

Joe Biden

Positive
00:07:05-00:07:21 (15 sec)
And so, folks, look, we have a choice. When we -- Trump and the MAGA Republicans made their choice. We can choose to build a better America or we can continue down this sliding path of oblivion to where we don't want to go. 21

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:07:21-00:07:35 (14 sec)
You know, under the American Rescue Plan -- and I'm not going to go through all these things, but just to give you an example -- we -- you know, we created -- we created nearly 10 million jobs in my first 16 months. Ten million new jobs in America. 22

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:07:35-00:07:59 (25 sec)
That American Rescue Plan also created and saved millions of jobs. Why? Because here in the state of Pennsylvania and almost every state, they didn't have enough money to keep teachers on the payroll, to keep firefighters on the job, to keep police on the job, to keep people -- nurses and docs -- on the job. 23

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:07:59-00:08:09 (10 sec)
And so, what did we do? We, in fact, gave them the money to make sure they did it. And this governor -- your governor -- spent it well, hiring thousands of firefighters and the like. 24

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:08:09-00:08:22 (13 sec)
And what happened was, we found ourselves -- because of the greed of some companies, we found that an awful lot of union members were about to lose their pensions. 25

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:08:22-00:08:31 (9 sec)
So we did something that hadn't been done in 50 years, significantly for labor: We passed the Butch Lewis Act. The Butch Lewis Act. 26

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:08:31-00:08:49 (17 sec)
And they told me -- they told me I couldn't do it. They me that. They really did. Remember, we didn't -- and we didn't get any Republican votes for it. But we got it done. We got it done. Because it's just about basic decency and fairness. And look, every single Republican voted against that -- every single one. 27

Joe Biden

Slightly Negative
00:08:49-00:09:02 (14 sec)
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. We're building roads and bridges and ports. As a matter of fact, I'm going to be back here not too long from now because we got $60 million to rebuild that bridge that collapsed the day I came here not long ago. 28

Joe Biden

Slightly Negative
00:09:02-00:09:18 (16 sec)
Folks, the money is going to go to expanding the nearby -- nearly 100-year-old failing lock and dam outside Pittsburgh. It's [inaudible], but it makes a big difference in terms of the economy. 29

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:09:18-00:09:21 (3 sec)
And so, we're going to build a new terminal at the Pittsburgh airport. 30

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:09:21-00:09:26 (5 sec)
We're doing this all over the country -- all over the country. And it's creating good, decent jobs. 31

Joe Biden

Positive
00:09:26-00:09:45 (19 sec)
But the reason why I talk about unions is not just because it's where I come from. It's more than that. It's more than that. I said I spoke to the Business Roundtable, the CEOs of the largest companies in -- in the United States, the National Chamber of Commerce. And I've been straightforward with them. 32

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:09:45-00:09:53 (8 sec)
I said, "Look, I'm a union guy, and I support them for one reason: because it's in your interest." And they look at me like, "What are you talking about?" 33

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:09:53-00:10:15 (22 sec)
You are the best-trained, the most skilled workers in the world. It makes -- no, I'm not just saying it. Most people don't realize, to join a lot of the trade unions, you have to have four or five, six months -- six years of training. It's like going to college. You get paid while you're there, but not very much. But it's -- you're the best in the world. 34

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:10:15-00:10:25 (10 sec)
And it makes a hell of a lot of sense for America to spend and companies to spend a little more money to have something that lasts a whole hell of a lot longer than it is to do something on the cheap. 35

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:10:25-00:10:44 (19 sec)
Look, you've heard me say it before. Wall Street didn't build the middle class. Wall Street didn't build America. The middle class built America, and unions built the middle class. That's -- that's just a fact. 36

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:10:44-00:11:12 (28 sec)
And by the way, the other thing that I found out -- I didn't -- I had been in the Senate long time and Vice President. I didn't realize there was a law passed in early '30s under Roosevelt -- and the press is looking at me like, "What's he going to say now?"; I'm going to tell them -- that, in fact, said, "Buy American." That we -- any money a President spent that was appropriated, he could insist that the money could only be spent on American products. 37

Joe Biden

Slightly Positive
00:11:12-00:11:33 (21 sec)
Well, guess what? We're buying American. And I get -- and I get to spend -- of your money as President, I get to allocate over $600 billion -- $600 billion every year. And they're American-made products made by American workers in America. And that's why we're moving. 38

Joe Biden

Slightly Negative
00:11:33-00:11:39 (6 sec)
Where is it written to say that we can't be a great manufacturing facili- -- hub in America -- in the world again? 39

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:11:39-00:11:49 (9 sec)
We've made sure that we have now over 640,000 new manufacturing jobs. What's -- where does it say we can't do this? 40

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:11:49-00:11:56 (7 sec)
So I start off with the proposition that it's about just basic decency. I'm not going to go on much longer, I promise. 41

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:11:56-00:12:08 (12 sec)
Here's what's happened. You know, we don't have a tax system that's fair at all. It's not even close. And that's why, for example, I've been pushing for tax fairness for a long, long time. 42

Joe Biden

Slightly Positive
00:12:08-00:12:30 (22 sec)
But guess what? They told me we -- I couldn't do that either. Well, there were 55 corporations in America in 2020 that made over $400 billion and didn't pay a single penny in income tax -- not a single penny. Now they're paying a minimum of 15 percent in their income tax. 43

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:12:30-00:12:48 (17 sec)
And guess what? To talk about the Inflation Reduction Act, and -- I've been fighting, when I was a senator, for a long, long time -- fighting the pharma companies, fighting so that Medicare could set the price they pay for Medicare drugs and negotiate for those drugs. 44

Joe Biden

Positive
00:12:48-00:12:57 (10 sec)
Well, guess what? Anybody of you -- you don't have to raise your hand, but any of you have a child who has Type 2 diabetes who needs insulin every day, once a week? 45

Joe Biden

Somewhat Negative
00:12:57-00:13:15 (18 sec)
Well, guess what? It costs those outfits 15 bucks to make and package them. That's all it takes. You know what they charge? They charge somewhere between 625 bucks a month and 1,000 bucks a month. It's wrong. It's simply wrong. They can make three and a half times the profit that they -- that it costs them to do it. 46

Joe Biden

Leans Positive
00:13:15-00:13:25 (10 sec)
Well, they said it couldn't be done. Well, guess what? We were able to change it, so allowing -- which we've been working for a long time -- allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices. 47

Joe Biden

Neutral
00:13:25-00:13:32 (7 sec)
We pay the highest drug prices of any nation in the world here in the United States of America. And guess what? There's no rationale for it. 48

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:13:32-00:13:59 (27 sec)
So we finally passed -- Medicare is now negotiating. No senior -- because of what we did in the Inflation Reduction Act, no senior, no matter how big their drug bill is -- if they're fighting cancer or any other serious problem, and they're spending thousands and thousands of dollars on treatment -- guess what? They'll not have to pay more than $2,000 a month no matter what their bill is. No matter what their bill is. 49

Joe Biden

Neutral
00:13:59-00:14:04 (4 sec)
If they need insulin, they won't have to pay more than $35 a month. 50

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:14:04-00:14:26 (22 sec)
I have been fighting -- I've been fighting pharma for my entire career, my entire career. And we finally beat pharma. We finally beat pharma. Not a single Republican vote. Not a single vote. [Audience member calls out "We respect you for it"] 51

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:14:26-00:14:36 (10 sec)
Well, I tell you what. The fact is that there's a lot more we have to do. Like I said, we built 650,000 manufacturing jobs in America. 52

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:14:36-00:15:01 (25 sec)
Today, unions in this country are -- have now had the support -- whether they're union members are not -- of over 60 percent of American people. Never before has unions been that popular. Labor unions -- unions. Over 60 percent of the American people think it's important because they're figuring out: You are the bulwark against excess. You're the ones-- you're the ones. 53

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:15:01-00:15:25 (24 sec)
And by the way, you know, like all of you, like -- I shouldn't say "all" -- like many of you, I wasn't raised poor. But I was -- we weren't wealthy. We lived in a three-bedroom, split-level home in a little town called -- a little area called Mayfield in Delaware, with four kids, a mom and the dad, and the grandpop living with us. But we were all right. We were all right. 54

Joe Biden

Slightly Negative
00:15:25-00:15:35 (10 sec)
We could always tell when things were going rough. You could hear in the wall, three of -- we had two sets of bunks in one room. You could hear my dad when he was restless. I'd hear the headboard move. 55

Joe Biden

Slightly Negative
00:15:35-00:15:41 (6 sec)
I remember asking my mom one day, "What's the matter with Dad?" She said, "Honey, he just -- we just lost our insurance." 56

Joe Biden

Negative
00:15:41-00:15:52 (11 sec)
People shouldn't have to face that reality in America. That shouldn't be the case. Unions have made sure you didn't have to face that, but the rest of the country still is struggling. 57

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:15:52-00:16:07 (15 sec)
And we finally -- we're making significant changes in healthcare. We now are in a situation where we've been able to put another 2,400 bucks for a family of four -- reduce the price of insurance for -- under the Affordable Care Act. 58

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:16:07-00:16:11 (4 sec)
And by the way, these guys are still going after the Affordable Care Act. They want to get rid of it. 59

Joe Biden

Positive
00:16:11-00:16:24 (13 sec)
And the only reason anybody with a preexisting condition that isn't wealthy and can afford a very expensive policy has any coverage is because of the Affordable Care Act. The only reason. And they're still going after it. 60

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:16:24-00:16:51 (26 sec)
And Social Security. From your first paycheck, you've been pa- -- you've been paying for Social Security. Well, guess what? The guy heading up the Republican campaign committee for the United States Senate, Senator Scott from the South, and the guys whose home state I just lived in Wisconsin -- these guys don't even think Social Security should be guaranteed. They want it on the ballot box -- on the ballot every five years. Every five years, it has to be reauthorized. 61

Joe Biden

Neutral
00:16:51-00:17:03 (12 sec)
You paid for it. And the guy in Wisconsin, he concluded that it should be every single year -- every single year, you should have to vote on whether or not you keep Social Security, whether you keep it or cut it or change it or alter it. 62

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:17:03-00:17:14 (12 sec)
What's going on here, man? This is not the country that most of you -- this is not the country most Republicans -- most Republicans who represented this state supported for the longest time. 63

Joe Biden

Leans Positive
00:17:14-00:17:36 (22 sec)
And so, folks, look, the fact is that when you have Social Security that's under attack, when you have Medicare that's under attack, when -- the refusal to stick with -- finding making sure that you're in a circumstance where you have some access to healthcare, this is -- this is, again, we -- we can change things. And we're going to change them for the better. 64

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:17:36-00:17:45 (8 sec)
You know, and here's the deal. You know, as I said, Wall Street didn't build this country. The middle class built it. And unions built the middle class. 65

Joe Biden

Somewhat Negative
00:17:45-00:17:56 (11 sec)
Let me close on a serious note. When I announced -- and I meant it -- I got roundly criticized -- with good reason; it's legitimate to criticize me on it -- I said I was running for three reasons. 66

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:17:56-00:18:05 (9 sec)
One, to restore the soul America. By that, I meant decency, honor, meaning what you say, literally treating people with some respect. 67

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:18:05-00:18:21 (16 sec)
The second reason I said I was running is I'm so sick and tired of trickle-down economics. I wanted to build the economy from the bottom up and the middle out. Because when that happens, the wealthy do very, very well. They do very well. And everybody has got a shot. Everybody has got a shot. 68

Joe Biden

Neutral
00:18:21-00:18:30 (9 sec)
And the third reason I said I was running: because I wanted to unite the country. And because you can't maintain a democracy without being able to reach a consensus. 69

Joe Biden

Slightly Positive
00:18:30-00:18:43 (13 sec)
I've spent a lot of time with foreign leaders -- from the leader of China, Russia, et cetera. The leader of China, Xi Jinping, just tells me straight up -- I've spent more time with him than any other head of state: over 76 hours. 70

Joe Biden

Positive
00:18:43-00:18:55 (12 sec)
And guess what he said? Democracies can't be sustained in the 21st century because they require consensus, and things are moving so rapidly, you can't get consensus, so that's why autocracies are going to succeed. 71

Joe Biden

Slightly Positive
00:18:55-00:19:05 (10 sec)
Well, I reject that notion. I reject it. I think we can come out of what we got into stronger than we got into it when we -- stronger than before we started. 72

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:19:05-00:19:27 (21 sec)
And, folks, look, you know, all of us love the country. But you can't love the country and say how much you love it when you only accept one of two outcomes from election: either you won or you were cheated. It doesn't work that way. 73

Joe Biden

Negative
00:19:27-00:19:42 (15 sec)
You can't love the country when you refuse -- you refuse to maintain just the basic democratic principles that were set out that we all learn from time we're kids in school: that you accept the outcomes of elections. 74

Joe Biden

Leans Negative
00:19:42-00:19:51 (9 sec)
You can't say you love the country when, in fact, you either win or you have been cheated. And that's where we are now. 75

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:19:51-00:20:13 (23 sec)
And I don't -- there's much more to say, but I've already said too much to you. But here's the deal. I am absolutely convinced -- I'm absolutely convinced, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart: There's not a thing we can't do in America -- I mean it -- not a single, solitary thing we can't do if we do it together. I mean it. 76

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:20:13-00:20:26 (13 sec)
And it's about time we stand up and remember who in God's name we are. We're the United States of America. There's nothing beyond our capacity. So let's go out and demand, and it's the easiest proposition. 77

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:20:26-00:20:37 (11 sec)
We'll win if people vote. So just remind everybody: Vote. Go out and vote. We vote, we win and reestablish this country and make it even better than it was before. 78

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:20:37-00:20:41 (4 sec)
Thank you all for standing so long. God love you. I'm way beyond -- thank you. 79

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:20:41-00:20:48 (7 sec)
What am I doing? I'm going out here? 80

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:13:10-00:13:23 (13 sec)
Well, guess what? We also had, in this bill of mine -- we also had a provision that affected people who weren't on Medicare, but because of the leadership of your senior senator and others, it got defeated. But I'm coming back and getting it. 81

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:13:23-00:13:41 (18 sec)
Imagine -- this about this. Imagine being a mom or a dad -- I mean this from the bottom of my heart. Imagine being a mom or a dad with a kid with Type 2 diabetes, knowing you need that insulin and you don't have the insurance, you can't pay for it. I'm not joking. Think about it. Think about how it would rip your heart it. 82

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:13:41-00:13:48 (7 sec)
It's wrong. It's simply wrong. And we're going to end it. It costs 10 bucks, and you can make 35 if you want. That's it. 83

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:13:48-00:14:11 (23 sec)
For decades, the biggest corporations -- and by the way, I know corporations; I come from the corporate state of the world. [Laughter] More corporations are incorporated in Delaware than every other nation -- every other state in the country combined. Okay? So I could write a doctrine on corporations. [Laughter] So, it's not like I'm anti-corporation generically. But I do think everybody should pay their fair share. 84

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:14:11-00:14:26 (15 sec)
And, by the way -- and, by the way, look, for decades, the biggest corporations and the wealthiest Americans have fought to block a fair tax code. Republicans passed a $2 trillion tax cut mainly benefiting the wealthiest corporations under the Trump administration. Put us -- [Audience boos] 85

Joe Biden

Leans Negative
00:14:26-00:14:27 (1 sec)
By the way, it increased the debt by $2 trillion. 86

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:14:27-00:14:32 (5 sec)
Well, guess what? In 2000, 55 of those corporations earned a $40 billion in profit. They didn't pay a single solitary penny in taxes. [Audience boos] 87

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:14:32-00:14:38 (6 sec)
And the wealthiest Americans -- of the 700-plus billionaires in America -- you know what their average tax rate is -- the federal tax? Eight percent. They pay more taxes than any one of you -- less -- fewer taxes than any of you pay. [Audience member calls out "It's not right!"] 88

Joe Biden

Somewhat Negative
00:14:38-00:14:45 (7 sec)
It's not right. No, no, I mean, this is -- I -- it's just outrageous. 89

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:14:45-00:14:49 (4 sec)
Well, guess what? Guess what? I wasn't able to take care -- anyway. 90

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:14:49-00:14:55 (6 sec)
If you're a cop, a teacher, a firefighter, a steelworker, a miner, you pay double that federal tax. It's just wrong. 91

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:14:55-00:14:58 (3 sec)
But this year, the American people won. Now, big corporations have to pay at least the minimum tax of 15 percent -- at least. 92

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:14:58-00:15:03 (5 sec)
The days of billion-dollar companies paying zero, they are over in America. And they know they can afford it. 93

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:15:03-00:15:15 (11 sec)
And while we're doing this, we're actually reducing the federal deficit. You know how they talk about responsible de- -- they -- the last guy left me with a giant deficit. Well, guess what? In my first year I reduced the deficit by $350 billion. 94

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:15:15-00:15:22 (7 sec)
And you know how much -- you know how much I'm reducing the deficit this year? One trillion, five hundred thousand reduction of the deficit. 95

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:15:22-00:15:37 (15 sec)
And, by the way, just by dealing with allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices, it means Medicare doesn't have to pay out that many tax dollars to buy them. That alone is reduce -- going to reduce, over time, $300 billion in the deficit. 96

Joe Biden

Positive
00:15:37-00:15:46 (9 sec)
You would think that if Republicans really cared about reducing inflation, they'd vote for the Inflation Reduction Act. But every single Republican in House and Senate voted against it. Every single Republican in the House and Senate. [Audience boos] 97

Joe Biden

Leans Positive
00:15:46-00:15:54 (8 sec)
Now, I admit some of them voted against it. They thought it made sense, but they weren't -- they couldn't let Biden, quote, "have a victory." It's not my victory. It's American people's victory. 98

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:15:54-00:16:11 (17 sec)
In spite of the fact that while doing all this we lowered the deficit by a trillion five this year here, here in America, every single Republican voted against lowering prescription drug prices, against lowering healthcare costs, against protecting your pensions, against lower energy costs, against creating good-paying jobs, against a fairer tax system -- every single one in the House and Senate. Every one. 99

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:16:11-00:16:19 (8 sec)
And one thing more: When Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the National Labor Re- -- Labor Relations Act -- when it passed in the '30s -- he didn't say it was okay to be a union. He said -- and in fact, it says we should "encourage unions" -- "encourage." 100

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:16:19-00:16:22 (3 sec)
Well, I'm encouraging unions. That's what I've been doing from day one. 101

Joe Biden

Slightly Positive
00:16:22-00:16:25 (3 sec)
It includes for public service sector workers in Wisconsin as well. 102

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:16:25-00:16:38 (13 sec)
Today, support for unions in this country is higher than it's been in nearly 60 years. Think about this. You guys know the numbers. Unions are more -- have more support today in America in public opinion than any time in 60 years. The key -- it's a key way to building the economy, to grow us from the bottom up and the middle out. I'm so sick and tired of trickle-down economics. 103

Joe Biden

Negative
00:16:38-00:16:49 (11 sec)
I come from a family where my dad worked hard. He worked like hell. We lived a decent, middle-class life. We lived in a three-bedroom, split level home in a development that was -- there -- as we were -- the area was growing, with four kids and a grandpop. 104

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:16:49-00:16:53 (4 sec)
I sometimes wonder -- anyway, I wonder -- it was great for us, but those walls are thin. [Laughter] 105

Joe Biden

Slightly Negative
00:16:53-00:16:56 (3 sec)
But all kidding aside, we did fine. No complaints. We did fine. 106

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:16:56-00:17:03 (7 sec)
But here's the point: The biggest contrast from what MAGA Republicans -- the extreme right, the -- the "Trumpies" -- they want to go to -- these MAGA Republicans in Congress are coming for your Social Security as well. 107

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:17:03-00:17:09 (6 sec)
Now, are you -- by the way, as I said, you might think I'm making this -- some of this stuff up it's so outrageous. 108

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:17:09-00:17:19 (10 sec)
But here's the deal, guys: The Republicans -- read the Republican campaign plan, the Senate campaign they put out this year. Go online and read it. Senator Rick Scott of Florida heads that campaign committee. [Audience boos] 109

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:17:19-00:17:21 (2 sec)
It's all in black and white. I'm not making it up. You can go online and read it. 110

Joe Biden

Positive
00:17:21-00:17:26 (5 sec)
They want to require Congress to vote on the future of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid every five years to decide whether they continue. [Audience boos] 111

Joe Biden

Negative
00:17:26-00:17:35 (9 sec)
No, no, every five years, they get to vote to change, to cut, to reduce, or entirely eliminate Social Security and other things. How's that make us feel knowing you guy -- [Audience boos] 112

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:17:35-00:17:40 (5 sec)
And then along -- you know, remember that song, "Along Comes Jones"? And then along comes Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. [Audience boos] 113

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:17:40-00:17:50 (10 sec)
He -- he's arguing that five years is too long to wait to savage these programs people depend on. He wants to put Social Security and Medicare literally on that chopping block every single year, treated like any other appropriation. 114

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:17:50-00:17:58 (8 sec)
Let me remind you: You paid for your Social Security and Medicare. It's taken out of your paycheck from the time you're 18 years old. 115

Joe Biden

Slightly Positive
00:17:58-00:18:10 (12 sec)
The same guy who said -- he's the same guy who said if the Republicans get control of the Congress, they're coming after the Affordable Care Act again, denying health insurance to anyone with a preexisting condition. That's the only reason they have -- they're able to get it. 116

Joe Biden

Positive
00:18:10-00:18:16 (7 sec)
Only reason they get -- if they have a preexisting condition, the only way they can insurance is because of the Affordable Care Act. That's not a joke. 117

Joe Biden

Neutral
00:18:16-00:18:19 (3 sec)
This guy never stops. [Laughter] But guess what? I ain't stopping either. 118

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:18:19-00:18:31 (12 sec)
Folks, you and I, we offer a starkly different vision for this country -- a vision of a fairer, more decent America. One where everybody has a fair share, where every American is treated with -- as my dad would say -- with dignity. The economy that works for work, not wealth. 119

Joe Biden

Neutral
00:18:31-00:18:37 (6 sec)
Now let's me close with this: We're at a serious moment in our nation's history, and it's not hyperb- -- 120

Joe Biden

Somewhat Negative
00:18:37-00:18:37 ( sec)
[A protester disruption can be heard in the audience] 121

Joe Biden

Somewhat Positive
00:18:37-00:18:39 (2 sec)
I mean it from the bottom of my heart. As I said last week, we remain in the battle for the soul of America. 122

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:18:39-00:18:39 ( sec)
By the way -- [Audience member calls out "You're a liar"] 123

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:18:39-00:18:40 (1 sec)
All right, God love ya. [Audience boos] 124

Joe Biden

Unknown
00:18:40-00:18:41 (1 sec)
Let him go. Let him go. [Audience boos] 125

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:18:41-00:18:51 (10 sec)
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Don't -- let him -- let him go. Let him -- he's -- look, everybody is entitled to be an idiot. No, no. Everybody is entitled. Okay? 126

Joe Biden

Slightly Negative
00:18:51-00:19:01 (11 sec)
Look, extreme MAGA Republicans don't just threaten our personal rights and our economic security, they embrace political violence. Look -- no, look, the reason -- I'm not talking all Republicans, I'm talking about these extreme MAGA Republicans. 127

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:19:01-00:19:06 (5 sec)
Think about it. Think about it. The definition of democracy is you accept the will of the people when the votes are honestly counted. These guys don't do it. 128

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:19:06-00:19:19 (13 sec)
Name me a democracy in the world where a leader argues to engage in violence. To this day, MAGA Republicans in Congress defend the mob that stormed the Capitol, and people died later. 129

Joe Biden

Slightly Positive
00:19:19-00:19:22 (2 sec)
Senator Johnson said it was a -- "by and large a peaceful protest." [Audience boos] 130

Joe Biden

Leans Negative
00:19:22-00:19:28 (6 sec)
Have you seen the videos of what happened on that day, listened to the stories of the members of both parties of Congress and the jeopardy they were put in? 131

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:19:28-00:19:34 (6 sec)
Cops attacked and assaulted. Speared with flag poles. Sprayed with mace. Stomped on, dragged, brutalized. 132

Joe Biden

Neutral
00:19:34-00:19:40 (6 sec)
Police lost their lives as a result of that day. And the MAGA Republicans and your senior senator said it was "a peaceful protest." [Audience boos] 133

Joe Biden

Slightly Positive
00:19:40-00:19:54 (14 sec)
Folks, you can't be pro-ex- -- you can't be pro-insurrectionist -- I'm being deadly earnest now. There's no democracy where you can be pro-insurrection and pro-democracy. So, when I say that democracy is at stake, I mean what I'm saying literally. 134

Joe Biden

Very Negative
00:19:54-00:20:04 (10 sec)
You can't say you support law enforcement and call the people who attacked the police on January 6th "patriots". This was an attack on American democracy and all we stand for. 135

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:20:04-00:20:19 (15 sec)
Imagine if you go home this afternoon, turn on the television, and saw several thousand people storming the British Parliament, knocking down the doors, threatening the lives, trying to overthrow the election of the new prime minister, and people dying. What would you think? No, I'm being deadly earnest now. Honest to God, what would you think? You'd think, "This is not a democracy." 136

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:20:19-00:20:35 (16 sec)
Well, let me tell you something. Let me tell you something: That is why, in this moment, those of you in this country -- Democrats, Republicans -- and mainstream Republicans and independents -- we have to be stronger and more determined and more committed to saving American democracy than the MAGA Republicans and that guy walking out the door are [to] destroying democracy -- -- because democracy is at stake. 137

Joe Biden

Positive
00:20:35-00:20:39 (4 sec)
We got to remember who we are. We're the United States of America. There is nothing -- nothing we can't do if we do it together. 138

Joe Biden

Very Positive
00:20:39-00:20:48 (8 sec)
God bless you all. And may God protect our troops. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 139
