My cash balances are high because I am fiscally conservative. The debt which I have is against individual assets and is not personally guaranteed. Hence, The Plaza Hotel, which is substantially more valuable than the price I paid last year, has a mortgage against it but no guarantee of Donald Trump. If (or when the world goes to hell, a lender's sole recourse would be against my real estate but not against me individually. The reason I do not refer to debt is I do not personally guarantee anything. Another example is my recent acquisition of the Eastern Airline Shuttle. While there is debt against the asset, again it is not personally guaranteed. I have invested only a small amount of cash over and above the debt.
