An example would be the Wollman ice skating rink in Central Park. This job was totally botched by the politicians over a period of seven years. The city, at last count, had spent in excess of $15 million and was utterly unable to come close to opening the rink. When I took over, I demolished most of the inept construction and rebuilt the entire rink in four months. It is now a perfectly functioning facility, attracting record numbers of people. My total cost was less than $3 million. Billions of dollars are being wasted in the same manner on school buildings, subways, playgrounds, highways, bridges, etc. When looking at the capital budget of New York City, our next mayor will, I hope, understand this. Billions can be saved by someone who knows how to ask the right questions.
