The New York Times should not have allowed Paul Goldberger, whom I have criticized openly in my book and elsewhere as being totally lacking in taste, to critique Donald Trump and "Trump -- The Art of the Deal" ["Trump: Symbol of a Gaudy, Impatient Time," Jan. 31] without disclosing that he is an object of criticism within the pages of the book. I am outraged that Mr. Goldberger has written a column about me without acknowledging that he himself was criticized in my book.

Mr. Goldberger is evidently upset by the fact that he is prominently mentioned in "The Art of the Deal" and that the book has become not only a best seller but the No. 1 best-seller on every list. Mr. Goldberger's books have not sold nearly as well as mine because they are unnecessary (and boring). This lack of success should not give him the right, however, to use anything but a neutral forum to espouse his prejudiced views. My greatest disappointment is in The New York Times itself.

While I am honored that Mr. Goldberger considers me to be so pre-eminent and representative of the times, who is Mr. Goldberger to tell me about my social values, charities and where I should be spending my money? He talks of my book and the Wollman Rink and tells the world that I should develop more of a social conscience. Why doesn't he state that all of my profits from the book and the rink, which are considerable, go to charity, including United Cerebral Palsy, multiple sclerosis, AIDS research, the homeless, etc.?
