A new super PAC is targeting GOP Sen. Martha McSally in an early sign that the competitive Arizona Senate race could attract plenty of outside spending.
Kelly’s defenders say individual donations do not make him beholden to special interests the way PAC money would.
Kelly has also traveled the country and been politically involved with his wife through their group Giffords PAC, which supports candidates who want to combat gun violence.
Defend Arizona, a super PAC backing McSally, has already reserved $4.9 million in television time for general election ads.
The Club for Growth PAC and FreedomWorks announced in a joint statement in October that that they would oppose McSally’s candidacy if she ran, arguing she was not conservative enough for Arizona.
The Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, is “all in” for McSally, according to a GOP strategist familiar with SLF’s plans.
But a coalition of conservative groups including the Club for Growth PAC, Senate Conservatives Fund, and FreedomWorks said McSally is a liberal lawmaker.
She is aligned with the Blue Dogs, a group of more conservative Democrats, and chairs the group’s PAC.
