On the Hill, Rumsfeld Is in Demand by Senators and Students Alike

After several hours behind closed doors with the Senate Armed Services Committee last Tuesday, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld probably couldn’t wait to see some smiling, friendly faces. These college students waited more than an hour to get a glimpse of the man in charge of the Pentagon. He didn’t disappoint. Rumsfeld spent several minutes shaking hands with the excited students. The male student in the black coat even got Rumsfeld’s attention by shouting his name, opting for “Donald!” over the more traditional “Mr. Secretary.” The Defense secretary was on Capitol Hill to deliver an intelligence briefing on Iraqi war preparations. Although some Senators on both sides of the aisle have criticized the Bush administration for failing to adequately brief them on the potential war, Rumsfeld defended his communication with the Hill while speaking to reporters.
