Reining in Ohio

First, they were partners on the campaign trail. Then they were partners in the Ohio statehouse. Now they’re partners in the Senate. In this October 1990 photo, Mike DeWine and George Voinovich, now Republican Ohio Senators, stumped together in Xenia, Ohio, just before winning their respective bids to become lieutenant governor and governor of Ohio. Voinovich holds the reins in this photo, which was taken in DeWine’s home county. After unsuccessfully challenging Democratic Sen. John Glenn in 1992, DeWine took another shot at the Senate in 1994, this time winning the race to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Howard Metzenbaum. After finishing his two terms as Ohio governor, Voinovich won the seat being vacated by Glenn in 1998.
