Stumping in Ole Miss

Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) joined future first lady Nancy Reagan on the dais during a speech by Ronald Reagan during the Gipper’s 1980 campaign for the presidency. Cochran was 42 years old and just two years into his first term in the Senate when the speech was given at the Neshoba County Fair in Philadelphia, Miss. Reagan won the Magnolia State, edging out President Jimmy Carter, from nearby Georgia, 49 percent to 48 percent. Independent John Anderson of Illinois captured just 1 percent of the vote.
