Cover Boy

Few people can say they were featured on the cover of a major national publication. Count Rep. Baron Hill, a Democrat from Indiana, among them.

Hill earned the distinction Dec. 14, 1974, when The Sporting News ran this cover capturing Hill in action on the hardwoods. The photo shows Hill, No. 22 with his back to the camera, guarding Monte Towe. The 21-year-old Hill played for Furman University, while Towe hit the courts for North Carolina State University, the reigning NCAA champions at the time.

Both Hill and Towe, native Hoosiers, now belong to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Hill remains Seymour High School’s all-time leading basketball scorer, with 1,419 points. He also holds the Indiana state record in the 100-yard dash — 9.5 seconds.

His 9th district is home to both Indiana University and Milan High School, inspiration for the movie “Hoosiers.”
