Two recent promotions have given the House Science Committee a new communications director and a new special assistant to the chief of staff/administrative clerk.

Joe Pouliot, 27, has taken over as head of press relations for the committee. The former deputy communications director for the committee has worked on Capitol Hill since 2002 in a variety of positions from staff assistant to special assistant to chief of staff. He also once worked in the mayor’s office in his hometown of Utica, N.Y. A graduate of George Washington University, Pouliot holds a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Former intern David Mayorga is the committee’s other recent promotion. Mayorga will handle a variety of administrative and coordination issues for the committee. The Coral Springs, Fla., native graduated in 2003 from the University of Florida with a degree in anthropology.

Weldon to Get New Spinner. Later this month, Angela Sowa will be leaving the House Armed Services Committee to begin serving as press secretary for Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.).

Sowa, 28, has worked for the committee since 2002 and is also a former public relations/marketing assistant at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The Clarion University of Pennsylvania graduate holds a bachelor’s in communications/public relations and calls Slippery Rock, Ark., her home. [IMGCAP(1)]

Bageant Moves to Kennedy’s Office. Larry Bageant, a 21-year veteran of Capitol Hill, has moved over from Sen. John Breaux’s (D-La.) office to manage the mail system for Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.).

Bageant, who will now be Kennedy’s correspondence manger, worked for Breaux as a mail room supervisor for 13 years. He began his work on the Hill in 1983 as a staff assistant to the mail director for then-Sen. John Heinz (R-Pa.). The 46-year-old Lanham, Md., native now lives in Spotsylvania, Va.
