With plans set to open the doors to its new location at L’Enfant Plaza in June 2008, the National Children’s Museum announced Tuesday that it has sold its property at 800 Third St. NE and will close its doors on Labor Day to begin the transition process.

During the four-year construction process — for which museum trustees are launching a $100 million fundraising campaign — the children’s museum will become a “museum without walls” and will bring educational programs directly into District of Columbia schools and community centers.

International architect Cesar Pelli will design the new National Children’s Museum, which will be housed in a 140,000-square-foot facility at L’Enfant Plaza. Concept planning for the new museum will be led by Amaze Design, a Boston-based company that specializes in museums and exhibitions. The new museum expects to draw some 500,000 visitors in its first year alone.

The current museum property at Third and H streets has been sold to Abdo Development for conversion to condominiums.
