Edwards And McCain Run Strongest In General Election Match-Up

Read the full CNN/Opinion Research poll

In hypothetical general election match-ups, Democrat John Edwards and Republican John McCain would be each party’s strongest candidate. Hillary Clinton would beat Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney but lose narrowly to McCain, although McCain’s lead is within the poll’s margin of error. Barack Obama’s results are about the same, although he is in an actual tie with McCain. Edwards would beat all four Republicans by margins larger than Clinton or Obama.
