Rep. Carson Dies

Rep. Julia Carson (D-Ind.), known for her empathetic and savvy leadership, has died of lung cancer at the age of 69. Carson represented the Indianapolis-based 7th district for 12 years, but various health problems have kept her away from Congress since September. Carson announced in November that she would not seek re-election in 2008 because of her poor health. Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Dan Parker released a statement recalling Carson as a woman who “fought for those with no voice.” “On this day, we remember her warm smile, her quick wit and her love of life, and we pay tribute to a woman who has become a political legend,” Parker said. Carson’s death will necessitate a special election to replace her, though no details on the special were immediately available. The race is almost certain to draw several Democratic candidates, and Republicans believe they can compete for the district as well. — Shira Toeplitz
