Alaska: Young, Opponents Will Swim With the Fishes

Rep. Don Young (R) has agreed to participate in a debate with his Republican and Democratic opponents, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

In a debate limited to fisheries and seafood industry topics, Young will debate state Rep. Gabrielle LeDoux (R), 2006 nominee Diane Benson (D), former state House Minority Leader Ethan Berkowitz (D) and former state Democratic Chairman Jake Metcalfe.

The debate, which will be held in Kodiak, also will be broadcast on the radio, according to the report. Traditionally only gubernatorial and Senate candidates participate in the debate sponsored by ComFish, making this reportedly a first for House candidates.

Young has held his seat for more than three decades but is quite possibly facing his toughest re-election challenge to date. He raised $43,850 in the final financial reporting quarter of 2007, though he still boasted a healthy $948,200 in cash on hand at the end of the year.
