New Mexico: AFSCME’s Choice for Pearce Seat: McCamley

Doña Ana County Commissioner Bill McCamley, running for the Democratic nomination in the 2nd district, has been endorsed by the New Mexico political action committee run by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

McCamley is running for his party’s nod in the June 3 primary against former Lea County Commissioner Harry Teague. AFSCME, whose support is much sought after by Democratic candidates, represents more than 12,000 city, county, state and university employees in New Mexico.

“Bill is going to do great things for Southern New Mexico,” said Fred Marquez, an official with AFSCME’s New Mexico PAC. “We are going to work hard to make sure he is our next Representative in Washington.”

The Republican-leaning southern New Mexico 2nd district is being vacated by Rep. Steve Pearce (R), who is running for Senate. The competitive GOP primary is being contested by wealthy businessman and 2002 candidate Ed Tinsley, former Hobbs Mayor Monty Newman and retired banker Aubrey Dunn Jr.
