Eye on the Senate: New Jersey and Texas

Here’s an “Eye on the Senate” that has bad news, at least for now, for the Democrats with incumbent Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey apparently in a tight race with former Republican Rep. Dick Zimmer.

**New Jersey:** Lautenberg and Zimmer are in a statistical dead-heat with Lautenberg leading 45 percent to 44 percent with 7 percent choosing “other” and 4 percent undecided, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted June 4. The poll was taken after the 84-year-old Lautenberg easily defeated a primary challenge from Rep. Robert Andrews who campaigned on the theme that it was time for new leadership. Rasmussen notes that in New Jersey, where a Republican has not won statewide office since 1997, the races usually start tight and then the Democrat pulls away closer to election day. CQ Politics rates this race “Democrat Favored.”
