Jenkins Squeaks Past Ryun, Will Go Up Against Boyda

State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins won a narrow victory over former Rep. Jim Ryun Tuesday in the race for the Republican nomination in Kansas’ 2nd district, setting up a fall matchup with freshman Rep. Nancy Boyda (D). With all precincts reporting, Jenkins held on for a victory over Ryun, 51 percent to 49 percent. A little more than 1,000 votes separated the two Republicans in a contest where 63,473 ballots were cast. Boyda ousted Ryun in the heavily GOP-leaning district in 2006, and Republicans put a bull’s-eye on her almost immediately and have been targeting her ever since. Even before the GOP primary was decided, the National Republican Congressional Committee released a statement pronouncing Boyda’s days on Capitol Hill to be near an end. “Nancy Boyda is going to have to answer for her abysmal record on energy, taxes, and military support,” NRCC spokesman Ken Spain said.
