Poll: Goode in Good Shape for Now

A SurveyUSA poll conducted this week showed Rep. Virgil Goode (R-Va.) on solid ground to win a seventh House term in November.

Goode led Attorney Tom Perriello (D) 64 percent to 30 percent in the survey, conducted for WDBJ-TV in Roanoke and WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C.

The contest featuring Perriello and Goode, a former Democrat who has not faced a difficult re-election race since coming to Congress, is among the third-tier races that national Democrats view as having the potential to become competitive down the stretch this fall.

The survey also found that self-identified independent voters favored Goode by a 3-to-1 ratio and 27 percent of Democrats said they would cross over to vote for the Republican. Only 6 percent of Republicans said they favored Perriello.

The survey of 615 likely voters in the district was conducted Wednesday and had a 4-point margin of error.

Perriello, who is not widely known in the district, was recently named to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s “Red to Blue” program that directs resources to targeted races around the county.
