It’s August 1976, and President Gerald Ford is waving to the crowd from his car outside the Republican National Convention held in Kansas City, Mo. Although Ford narrowly beat Ronald Reagan for the GOP nomination that year, he went on to lose in the general election to Democrat Jimmy Carter.
