First Lady, Cindy McCain to Address Convention Today

First lady Laura Bush and Cindy McCain will briefly address the Republican National Convention at the end of today’s abbreviated session as part of a call for fundraising and public service for the Gulf Coast, convention officials said. Bush will introduce a video featuring four of the five Gulf Coast governors — all except Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.), “who has his hands full” with the storm. McCain will then come in and address the delegates and encourage financial support. Convention officials said they did not want to overly politicize the appearance but thought McCain could help encourage financial support. Presumptive vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin (R) of Alaska is in town but has no public schedule today, officials said.
