Protests Snarl Traffic

St. Paul police closed down streets around the Xcel Center on Tuesday night as protesters gathered near Seventh and St. Peters streets. Cars were at a standstill around 8:30 p.m., and police officials would only say that it was an “ongoing situation” and would not say whether there were any arrests. Dozens of officers in riot gear blocked off streets, while others rode on bicycles. On Monday, more than 280 people were arrested after some protesters broke windows and slashed tires. Most were released from jail Tuesday.
