Ensign Isn’t Shaking the Tree This Week

After sending out a memo last week blasting his GOP colleagues for not coughing up enough money, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Ensign (Nev.) has spent little time fundraising during this week’s Republican National Convention.

According to an aide, Ensign has focused less on raising money and more on speaking engagements and other activities.

The emphasis this week in St. Paul, Minn., is largely on “supporting our presidential nominee,” the aide said. The aide said Ensign regularly sends out e-mails and plans to host fundraising events soon after the convention.

Last week, Ensign expressed frustration with Republicans for not investing in the GOP war chest, saying that he will have to scale back the campaign budget if the money doesn’t begin to flow. Republicans are facing a well-funded Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and a rough political terrain this year.
