Towns Easily Wins Primary

Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.), facing what was thought to be his third tough primary challenge in the past five election cycles, easily defeated author and community activist Kevin Powell on Tuesday by a 2-1 margin.

With 100 percent of the precincts reporting in Towns’ central Brooklyn district, the Congressman won 67 percent of the vote and Powell, who is best known as the biographer of the late rap star Tupac, got 33 percent.

Powell, 42, tried to cast the race as a generational battle against the 74-year-old Congressman. But Towns simply had too much money and institutional support, and is now a shoo-in to win a 14th term in November.
