Levin Reiterates Support for Rangel

Emerging from a Monday night meeting with Democratic members of the Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) continued to dodge questions about whether he will relinquish his chairmanship amid ethics issues relating to his personal finances. “Do to me what you want, I’m not talking,” the Harlem Democrat told reporters as he quickly exited the scene. Asked whether Rangel was still the chairman after tonight’s huddle – where the New Yorker presumably gauged the level of support among colleagues for keeping his post – Rep. Sander Levin (D-Mich.) interjected, “You’re damn right he’s still the chairman.” Exiting lawmakers were tight-lipped on what was discussed in the meeting. But some hinted at a consensus that Rangel will remain chairman until a House ethics probe is completed. Asked if Rangel will keep his post as Democratic leaders apply pressure to finish the ethics investigation, Ways and Means member Allyson Schwartz (D-Pa.) said, “I think that’s correct.”
