House Democrats Raise Money for Culberson Challenger

Democratic leaders are set to gather in Washington, D.C., on Friday to raise money for wind energy executive Michael Skelly (D), who is running against Rep. John Culberson (R) in Texas’ solidly Republican 7th district.

Hosting the event for Skelly are House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Md.); Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen (Md.); as well as Reps. Melissa Bean (Ill.), Russ Carnahan (Mo.) and Lloyd Doggett (Texas).

“Michael Skelly was recently added to the DCCC Red2Blue program. As such, this is now a top priority race,” read the e-mailed invitation. “Michael is a moderate from Texas and would make a great new Member for the New Dem Coalition.”

The “New Dem Coalition” refers to the the New Democrat Coalition, a group of moderate House Democrats who are not members of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of fiscally conservative Democratic House Members. Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.) is chairwoman of the the New Democrat Coalition.

The 7th district of Texas encompasses a portion of the Houston suburbs and is among the most conservative in the Lone Star State.

The Skelly fundraiser is scheduled to be held at the National Democratic Club from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday.
