Obama Announces Support for Bailout Package

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) said this morning that he will support the financial system bailout package agreed to by Congress and the Bush administration early this morning.

The Democratic presidential candidate said in a written statement that the deal embraces principles he had laid out earlier for changing President Bush’s initial proposal. “While I look forward to reviewing the language of the legislation, it appears that the tentative deal embraces these principles,” Obama said.

Obama called on Congress to “show the same sense of urgency in dealing with the crisis facing Main Street” by passing an economic stimulus plan that includes funding for improving infrastructure and extending unemployment benefits.
