New Jersey: Newspaper Poll Shows Tight Adler-Myers Race

In the battleground 3rd district race to replace replace retiring Rep. Jim Saxton (R), Lockheed Martin executive Chris Myers (R) leads state Sen. John Adler (D) by 2 points, according to a new poll conducted for the Press of Atlantic City by Zogby International.

The survey of 400 likely voters gave Myers 39 percent to Adler’s 37 percent with 22 percent undecided. The poll was conducted Sept. 18-20 and had a 4.9-point margin of error.

As the candidates enter the final month of the campaign, Myers’ biggest weakness might be a lack of campaign cash. Coming off an expensive primary fight in early June, he reported $155,000 in cash on hand at the end of the second quarter. In recent weeks, Republican Party bigwigs have been trying to provide Myers with the cash he needs and recently he was the beneficiary of a fundraiser featuring President Bush. Also, Freedom’s Watch, a conservative 501(c)(4), has begun to spend money in the district in an effort to help Myers make up the cash gap.

On the Democratic side, despite Adler’s huge campaign war chest, national Democrats are coming in with financial support. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has reserved more than $1.5 million in airtime in the district and had already dropped hundreds of thousands of dollars in independent expenditures in the district through September.
