House Adjourns Until January

The House adjourned for the year shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Friday, just a couple of hours after passing the $700 billion economic recovery package.

With Rep. David Scott (D-Ga.) presiding, the chamber adjourned until 11 a.m. on Jan. 3.

However, the House may be called back into session by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) if circumstances require it.

“It’s a possibility,” said a Democratic leadership aide. She said Hoyer and Pelosi do not want to come back before January, but added: “Who knows? It’s a possibility.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has announced that the Senate will come back for a lame-duck session in November.
