New Mexico: Paper on Pearce’s Turf Backs Udall for Senate

Rep. Tom Udall (D) has been endorsed by the Las Cruces Sun-News in his bid for his state’s open Senate seat. The Sun-News is the largest newspaper in the 2nd district, which is represented by Udall’s Republican opponent, Rep. Steve Pearce.

The Sun-News endorsed Pearce in his GOP Senate primary with Rep. Heather Wilson, but opted for Udall, who holds the northern New Mexico 3rd district, in the general election.

“While Pearce has portrayed Udall as ‘breathtakingly liberal,’ he has, in fact, established a record as a common-sense moderate, first as the state attorney general and then as a member of Congress,” the Sun-News wrote in a staff editorial.

The newspaper recently endorsed Republican Ed Tinsley over Harry Teague (D) in the race to replace Pearce in the 2nd district.
