Jefferson Apparently Coming Back

Indicted Rep. William Jefferson (D) appears set to win re-election despite his ongoing legal problems stemming from a federal corruption probe.

With all precincts reporting, Jefferson beat former television news personality Helena Moreno by 12 points in the Democratic runoff Tuesday in the New Orleans-based 2nd district.

Louisiana’s election calendar was reshuffled by state officials in September following the destruction caused by Hurricane Gustav.

Now Jefferson will head to a December general election against Republican Anh Cao, a New Orleans lawyer, in a highly Democratic district.

Jefferson’s corruption trial is scheduled to begin right after the general election.
