Senate Republicans Seek Help in Image Redesign

Senate Republicans on Tuesday will huddle with Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, to hear ideas about how to rework the GOP image and re-establish party goals.

Barbour, who headed up the RNC through much of the party’s success in the 1990s and has been popular in his state despite a weak economy, will address Senate Republicans during the Conference’s first meeting since Nov. 4.

Barbour is expected to be the first of several prominent Republicans that GOP Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander (Tenn) and other leaders plan to bring in over the coming months, aides said. One aide said lawmakers want to “bring in people who can contribute to the discussion” about the party’s future, noting that Barbour is a good choice because “he’s an adult in this business.”
