Police Investigate Longworth Cafeteria Break-In

Capitol Police are investigating a break-in Friday night in the Longworth House Office Building.

Police officials declined to release details, citing an ongoing investigation.

“This is a criminal matter currently under investigation by the U.S. Capitol Police,” said police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider in an e-mail. “As such, no further information will be provided while the matter is being investigated.”

But several officers and staffers say a man walked into the Longworth cafeteria, where he threw food and trashed the kitchen. No property was destroyed.

In a separate but likely related event, an unidentified suspect also broke a window in the first-floor Longworth office of Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.), apparently to gain entry, according to officers and staffers.

Police are now investigating whether the the incidents are connected to an intoxicated man they stopped — and subsequently let go — in Longworth that night, according to several officers. The officers said that man was either a staffer or an intern.

The police reports on the incidents are not yet available.
