New York: Hoyer to Headline Event for McMahon

Freshman Rep. Michael McMahon (D) will be joined by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) at a fundraiser during next week’s Presidents Day recess that focuses on the stimulus package and its impact on New York City’s infrastructure.

McMahon and Hoyer will appear together at Craft, a four-star restaurant in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, on Feb. 18. Several leaders of New York’s construction industry are co-sponsoring the fundraiser, including Richard Anderson, the president of the New York Building Congress, and Denise Richardson, the acting director of the General Contractors Association of New York.

Ticket prices are $500 and $1,000.

McMahon flipped the Staten Island-based 13th district seat in 2008 following a sex scandal involving his predecessor, then-Rep. Vito Fossella (R). While no strong Republican has come forward to challenge McMahon yet, the Staten Island GOP bench is strong on paper — though many of these same Republicans decided to forgo the Congressional race last year after Fossella announced that he would not run for re-election.

Since the fall, there have been rumors that Fossella, who retains $58,000 in his campaign account, is considering trying to get his old job back, but there has been no concrete evidence that he is actively contemplating the idea. As of Dec. 31, McMahon had $209,000 in the bank.
