Democrats Move Housing Bill Over GOP Objections

House Democrats on Thursday overcame a GOP attempt to put “liar loans— at the heart of the debate over mortgage relief legislation.

The House voted 242-182 to turn aside a GOP motion to send the sweeping Democratic housing bill back to committee with instructions to exclude from relief anyone who misrepresented their income on mortgage applications or lenders that didn’t follow underwriting standards.

Eight Democrats from competitive districts voted with Republicans on the motion to recommit.

The House went on to pass the housing relief bill, 234-191.
