[IMGCAP(1)]From left: Speaker Tip O’Neill (D-Mass.), President Ronald Reagan and House Minority Leader Robert Michel (R-Ill.) share a laugh at a 1983 St. Patrick’s Day luncheon on Capitol Hill. During the 1980s, O’Neill frequently clashed with Reagan over policy issues, but the two men developed a friendship based in part on their shared Irish heritage. O’Neill once said that Reagan would call him and say, “Tip, is it 6 p.m. yet?— and the two would get together as good friends.
