Morning Business: Legal Payout

Alaska Rep. Don Young’s (R) legal defense fund issued two checks totaling $6,000 to Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in the first months of 2009.

[IMGCAP(1)]According to public records, Young’s legal fund also recorded a $5,000 donation from Seattle-based Trident Seafoods Corp. in January.

Federal investigators targeted fishing industry companies in 2006, including Trident Seafoods, as part of an ongoing corruption probe of state and federal officials in Alaska.

The Alaskan, who faces legal scrutiny for his relationship to an oil services company and a transportation project in Florida, established his defense fund in January 2008.

In addition, Young spent more than $1 million on legal fees from his campaign funds the 2007-08 cycle, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Young’s most recent campaign finance report, detailing the first quarter of 2009, contained only one payment of about $300 to Tobin, O’Connor, Ewing & Richard for legal services.
