LeMieux to Be Sworn In Thursday Afternoon

Florida Republican George LeMieux will be sworn in to the seat being vacated by Sen. Mel Martinez (R) at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, according to Democratic and Republican leadership sources. Martinez, who unexpectedly announced last month that he was prematurely stepping down from his Senate seat, is slated to deliver his farewell address Wednesday. Martinez had previously announced he would not seek a second term in 2010. Gov. Charlie Crist (R), who had already been in the hunt for the Senate seat next year, tapped LeMieux to fill out the remainder of Martinez’s term. LeMieux ran the governor’s 2006 campaign.
