Mass. Democratic Base Rallies Around Coakley

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley received the unanimous endorsement of the state AFL-CIO branch, the latest Democratic constituency to rally around the party’s nominee since her primary victory last week.

The Massachusetts AFL-CIO includes over 750 affiliated unions representing 400,000 members.

Coakely received the backing of the Massachusetts chapter of the Sierra Club and Massachusetts League of Environmental Voters on Monday and appeared with primary rival Stephen Pagliuca, an investor and co-owner of the Boston Celtics, to tout her job creation plan on Tuesday.

Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), who endorsed Coakley’s rival Rep. Mike Capuano in the waning days of the primary race, also issued a statement this week backing Coakley and criticizing GOP nominee state Sen. Scott Brown for his opposition to a cap-and-trade bill to reduce carbon emissions.
