GOP Leaders Want Obama to Admit Missteps

House Republican leaders said Wednesday morning that there was little President Barack Obama could say during his State of the Union address that would change their minds that the Democratic agenda has killed jobs.

“I think the president has to prove to the American people that he is listening to what they are saying,— Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said. “This isn’t about a pivot in terms of his messaging. I think most American people know that actions speak louder than words.—

Boehner’s office announced Tuesday night they would provide “real-time fact-checking— on the GOP Leader blog during the president’s Wednesday night speech.

Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Republicans wanted to hear the White House acknowledge it has made mistakes and needs to renew its commitment to curbing government spending.

“What we hope to hear is that the president has listened, has learned that the policies of last year just have fallen short of America’s expectations,— Cantor said. “We are hoping to hear a real commitment to those kitchen table issues.—

Obama is expected to focus a good share of his first State of the Union on job creation and the economy. The administration has come under fire for losing focus on those issues as the jobless rate continues to hover at 10 percent.

Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (Ind.) said GOP Members plan to reintroduce their ideas on the economy, health care reform and other issues to Obama when he attends their retreat in Baltimore on Friday.

“Tonight we will hear what the president has to say. Friday we will hear the president out but look forward to sharing our better solutions,— Pence said.
