The American Future Fund, a conservative advocacy group, has placed a new $250,000 television ad buy targeting Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) over Democrats’ procedural maneuvering on the health care bill.

The 60-second spot, airing statewide on network and cable television starting Thursday night, comes as Republicans step up their rhetoric opposing Senate Democrats’ plans to pass a controversial health care overhaul via reconciliation.

Republicans have dubbed the procedure the “nuclear option,” which the AFF ad picks up on.

“Reid and [President Barack] Obama plan to dodge Senate rules,” a narrator warns. “They’re resorting to a legislative trick called the nuclear option because they don’t have the votes.”

The ad then replays video of Reid and other leading Democrats denouncing Republican attempts to overcome a Democratic filibuster back in 2005, when the GOP controlled the Senate.

“Tell Reid Nevada patients need better than back-room deals and Senate tricks. Tell him to start over,” the ad concludes.

AFF plans to air a similar ad in additional states in the coming days.

Democratic Senate leaders have come under fire for other moves they have made to pass the Senate bill, including cutting deals with individual Senators. Republicans and groups such as AFF are betting that Americans are following the process debates and are turned off by the sometimes unsavory maneuvering.
