Nation: Priority Races Send Chairmen Traveling

A campaign committee chairman’s travel schedule shows which candidates need fundraising help, so the recess trips of Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen (Md.) and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (Texas) show some of each team’s priorities.

Van Hollen hit the road for Democratic incumbents, while Sessions raised money for a pair of challengers who won nominations in February.

Van Hollen was in Des Moines on April 7 to headline a fundraiser for Rep. Leonard Boswell (Iowa), who represents a marginally Democratic district.

Van Hollen also was the main draw at two fundraising events for Rep. Steve Kagen (Wis.), one in Madison and one in Milwaukee.

Van Hollen went to Ann Arbor, Mich., to host a luncheon with freshman Rep. Mark Schauer and went to Royal Oak, Mich., for a VIP reception with Rep. Gary Peters on April 9.

Sessions hit the road for Republican candidates in Illinois and Missouri.

He headlined Chicago fundraising events for state Sen. Randy Hultgren, who is challenging Rep. Bill Foster (D), as well as for Iraq War veteran Adam Kinzinger, who is challenging Rep. Debbie Halvorson (D).

Sessions also headlined an event on April 9 for the NRCC in St. Louis.
