U.S. Trade Representative Recovering From Car Accident

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk is staying with his family in Dallas and canceling an overseas trip after a Wednesday car accident that sent a metal ladder through his windshield.

Kirk was driving on a highway near Dallas when an 18-wheel truck hit a metal ladder lying in the road and tossed it into Kirk’s windshield, Reuters reported Wednesday night. The former Dallas mayor was treated for injuries to his left arm at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

“Ambassador Kirk was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released. No one was seriously injured in the accident,” his office said in a statement.

Kirk canceled his immediate schedule of meetings and public events, including a trip to Japan this weekend to attend the annual meeting of trade ministers at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis will lead the U.S. delegation instead.
