Heard on the Hill: Rep. Roskam’s Football Fumble
Rep. Peter Roskam might want to stay out of Baltimore for a little while … and maybe even Indianapolis.
While giving a floor speech Friday, the Illinois Republican referred to National Football League quarterback Peyton Manning — but misstated the city where Manning plays.
“If you’re Peyton Manning, the football great for the Baltimore Colts, and you come to the line of scrimmage, you have the right to do an audible call at the line,” Roskam said.
Now Manning is a great player — and he’s known for calling audibles — but he doesn’t play for the Baltimore Colts.
He plays for the Indianapolis Colts.
Roskam’s error is somewhat understandable because there once was a Baltimore Colts squad.
But they relocated to Indy in 1984 in a dramatic move that left Baltimore residents crushed. While Charm City is now home to the Baltimore Ravens (which were once the Cleveland Browns, but that’s another story), many residents remain bitter about the Colts’ departure.
Roskam quickly apologized on Twitter for his error: “Hey #Colts fans: sorry, I misspoke. Like when @BarackObama said the #Stimulus would keep unemployment below 8%.”
And when HOH contacted his office, spokesman Dean Thompson used the opportunity to push the GOP’s agenda.
“Chicago isn’t known for its great quarterbacks, but we know a bad one when we see one,” Thompson says, adding that Democrats have “brought the American people more debt and more taxes, exactly the wrong play to get us out of this recession.”
Fitness or Fashion?
Rep. Loretta Sanchez is well-known for being a fitness fiend, and on Friday morning, it appeared she was sporting one of her workout ensembles while presiding over the House floor.
Several HOH tipsters/fashionistas alerted us that the California Democrat appeared to be wearing a tracksuit jacket — dark blue with a zipper up the front and yellow stripes on either side — while overseeing the chamber. And it certainly looked to us like Sanchez’s jacket was meant for the gym.
But as it turns out, HOH’s eye for fashion isn’t as sharp as we thought. Sanchez’s office says her outfit was actually a knit skirt suit by high-end designer brand St. John.
Guess HOH needs to pick up a copy of the latest Vogue …
DJ Jack Kingston Delivers the Patriotic Jams
What will Republican Members of Congress be listening to on their iPods over the August recess? Probably a lot of Pat Boone, courtesy of Rep. Jack Kingston.
The Georgia Republican plans to send his GOP colleagues a copy of Boone’s 2003 patriotic album, “American Glory,” to add to their music collections.
“I thought that Members would like to hear some of the music he has done,” Kingston tells HOH. “He’s been a very patriotic guy over the years.”
Boone appeared at a recent “Theme Team” meeting, an hourlong gathering of conservative Members that Kingston organizes each week.
Members seemed to be impressed by Boone, and the Congressman was inspired to buy the album for his colleagues after his mother-in-law went searching to buy a patriotic CD and couldn’t find one, he says.
Kingston points out that Boone isn’t just a famous entertainer, he’s also respected for his philanthropy and charity efforts.
“Unlike so many entertainers these days, he’s kept a clean image,” Kingston explains.
Mangia! Mangia!
Nothing works up an appetite quite like the last few days of session before August recess. HOH hears House Minority Leader John Boehner blew off some steam Thursday night with a meal at Barracks Row eatery Trattoria Alberto.
Our spy spotted the Ohio Republican, sans jacket, smoking and holding court outside the Italian restaurant — one of his favorite D.C. spots, HOH notes.
No word on Boehner’s dinner companions or what he ate, although we do hear that he was happy to chat with passers-by.
Overheard on the Hill
“Greene, who has never married, said he has a girlfriend, but wouldn’t mind if the actress Raven-Symone got in touch.”
— A snippet from a recent Los Angeles Times profile of South Carolina Democratic Senate candidate Alvin Greene, who apparently has a little crush on the gal who played Olivia on “The Cosby Show.”
