House Minority Leader John Boehner will make a stop in southern Minnesota at the end of August to campaign for the Republican running against Rep. Tim Walz (D). The Ohio Republican will appear with state Rep. Randy Demmer on Aug. 30.

Boehner will be the biggest-name Republican to visit the district so far, according to Demmer’s campaign manager, Jason Flohrs. The eight-year state Representative also has the support of Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, and he hopes to eventually schedule events with the outgoing governor, who is likely to run for president in 2012.

Demmer was named to the second tier of the National Republican Congressional Committee’s three-tier “Young Guns” program in July. On the other side, though, Walz is not on the list of endangered incumbents the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has focused on helping with its “Frontline” program.

Richard Carlbom, Walz’s campaign manager, said the Congressman has no plans to bring in any national Democrats soon. He was unimpressed with the Boehner visit.

“We consider it the Boehner bailout express coming in to introduce his plan to privatize Social Security,” Carlbom said.

Two more candidates will be on the ballot in November. Steve Wilson ran as a Republican for the Minnesota state Senate in 2006 but is running as a member of the Independence Party in this race. Lars Johnson, a food safety consultant who isn’t affiliated with a party, will also be on the ballot.
